Yerba Buena Garden’s historic, hand-carved carousel built by craftsman Charles Looff in 1904 and considered a masterpiece of American artistry is undergoing long-scheduled improvements to ensure that it will be operating for another 100 years for all ages to marvel at and enjoy.
The multi-month restoration required a meticulous disassembly and rebuilding of the carousel by an expert team specializing in carousel restoration. The carousel will re-open with a dedication ceremony on Saturday May 17, 2014 in honor of Supervisor Leroy King who helped create the Yerba Buena Children’s Garden during his time on the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, and was instrumental in the purchasing of the carousel and having it returned to San Francisco where it belongs.
